The Disney’s animated feature film “Aladdin”, based on the folktale of “Aladdin and the Magic Lamp” from “One Thousand and One Nights”, was released on November 25, 1992 in the United States (on August 7, 1993 in Japan) and made $200 million at the box office, a record high in the animated film industry. It became such a big hit that its sequels were produced in OVAs and TV animation series.

Due to the influence of this popular film, a certain boom arrived in the U.S. It was to name their daughters “Jasmine”.

Jasmine, the heroine of “Aladdin”, is a lively and lovable princess. Wishing their daughter to be a woman like her and lead a happy life, many decided to name their child Jasmine.

According to the 1994 statistics on baby names in Illinois, “Jasmine” was ranked the 15th among female names. The total population of Illinois in 1990’s was approximately 12 million, so the rank suggests a pretty big influence of the film.

It is said that an actress and musician Jasmine Guy was also part of reasons for the popularity, though.

In any case, we can say for sure that “Aladdin” was such a big hit that many even felt like naming their precious children after the character of the film.
