【tdr0052】Dance scenes in “Beauty and the Beast” and “Sleeping Beauty”

The Disney’s animated feature film “Beauty and the Beast” was released on September 23, 1992 in Japan, and on November 22, 1991 in the U.S. It is a love story between a prince who is magically transformed into a beast by a witch and a beautiful woman who loves to read books.

The beast, who could trust nobody but himself first, gradually opens his heart as he spends time with the heroine Bell. In a later scene, the two dance together in a dance hall happily. This dance greatly reduces the distance between the two. But there is a secret behind this dance scene.

The secret is related to “Sleeping Beauty”, Disney’s another feature film released on July 23, 1960 in Japan and on January 29, 1959 in the U.S.

They may seem to have nothing in common other than that both are Disney films, but there is a deep relation.

That is the dance scene.

The truth is, the dance scene in “Sleeping Beauty” was also used in “Beauty and the Beast”. If you compare the scenes… you will find that the couples move exactly the same way. Hardcore fans of Disney films may have noticed this fact at the very first time they watched them.

Then, why did they decide to use the same scene?

Of course, it is not that they wanted to scamp their works. It may sound similar, but the reason was ‘lack of time’.

To complete the work in the tight schedule, they had no choice but to use an existing scene to meet the strict deadline. Well, the re-use is not something noticeable; in fact, ordinary people would not notice this fact unless told so. Nothing is to blame.

If you have a chance to compare the two films, have a close look at the dance scenes.
